Top Tip: If you are struggling try to think of examples of when someone clearly haven't shared your attitude or values. What questions can you ask to discover how the applicants would tackle that situation?

Do They Have The Ability?

Do They Have The Ability To Succeed In The Role?

You've now broken down the key reason they are joining your team (the challenge they are here to help you overcome), what success in the role looks like and how they need to behave to achieve success in this role. Now we can set questions all applicants will need to answer to apply to see if they have the aptitude for the role.

What questions can we ask to see if they understand how to be successful in the role?

This is the area where you can ask technical (potentially nerdy!) questions if appropriate to see if they know their stuff.

Here are some examples to help give you a flavour for what you might ask if you don't have a clear idea just yet.

About The Role

What They Will Be Doing

Here is what they will actually be doing.

Just in case you're a real weirdo and don't spend your free time writing job descriptions for new roles, we thought we would share a few so you can see some other successful ones.

Example 1

Your main role will be to assist our tax consultants in preparing technical reports on behalf of very innovative companies, for the purpose of Research and Development tax credits.

We will provide you with full support and training throughout, to help you on your way in this interesting part of tax.

  • Researching clients, Industry and identifying technical areas that could qualify for the claim
  • Writing and collating technical reports in a cohesive and comprehensive manner to enable the client to maximise their claim
  • Collaboration with other members of the team to meet deadlines for this work, and request further information when necessary from the client.
  • Communicating with the rest of the team to give the best possible client experience.

Example 2

Your role is broken down into two main areas:

Funding Administration

  • Leading the claims submission procedure, working alongside the Innovation Manager
  • Ensuring all project evidence meets the guidelines of our ERDF Funding agreement
  • Supporting and regularly reporting financial information to the Innovation Manager and Deputy Innovation Manager
  • Maintenance of management systems and records/documentation
  • Coordination of internal and external audits to make everything is up to date

Marketing & Communication Support

  • Helping the team to deliver innovation-led business support to SMEs, particularly start-ups and those seeking support to grow
  • Keeping the Breakthrough website up to date so we are fully utilising the marketing and partnership opportunities associated with the site
  • Maintaining the CRM system and recording project expenditure
  • Communication support within the project team and between the project team and external organizations
  • Coordination of project activities such as events and innovation platforms

 Example 3

On a week to week basis your role may include:

  • Educating clients on our market-leading new system and what it can do for them
  • Updating the rest of the team with what’s going on with each client by maintaining notes on our system
  • Proactively communicating with clients to keep them updated on where each job is at
  • Reporting sales numbers from your accounts to the key stakeholders in the business
  • Developing new business opportunities with our existing clients

In order to do this effectively, you will need to invest the time in building relationships with each of our clients so you can understand both them as people and their challenges so you can help solve them.

Example 4

On a day to day basis your role may include:

  • Managing the implementation of the eCommerce plan with the current eCommerce Manager;
  • Managing relationships with external agencies;
  • Overall responsibility for the day to day management of the channel with the current eCommerce Manager;
  • Plan, project manage and implement new projects and functionality to the existing eCommerce function;
  • Monitor and report channel performance across agreed targets;
  • Represent the eCommerce department on cross-functional projects when required

Account Manager - Success in this role looks like ensuring all of our your accounts are still working with us in 12 months time and increasing the revenue generated by them by 10%.

Customer Service Support – Your role is all about helping our customers to experience the best service possible and so success in this role is maintaining an average customer satisfaction score of 90% or above.

Field Sales Representative – To be a top performer in this role you need to be bringing on at least 1 grade A client per month.

Project Manager – You will be recognised as being successful in this role if you can deliver your projects to the required standard and no later than 10% longer from the internal deadline.

Sales Administrator – Success for this role is to ensure sales data is up to date and relevant on our internal system so we can accurately forecast from it.

It can prove pretty tricky to explain what your organisation does to people who are outside of your group in a way that they will understand.

In order to be able to communicate this effectively you need to avoid using insider terminology (terms you have created inside your organisation but others don't know) or acronyms that  are meaningless to others.

Here are some examples from other organisations we have worked with to help inspire you:
